Anyone who enjoys spending many hours on model building will quickly realise how important high-quality tools can be. For getting started and for minor repairs, inexpensive or older tools may be sufficient, but anyone who truly loves their hobby will sooner or later come to know and appreciate the right tools.
Below, we would like to explain a few important aspects of choosing them.
“If you buy cheap, you buy twice”
Most people have come across this saying before, but nowhere is it as accurate as with tools. The price range—from discount products and China imports to branded goods—is often enormous. Some people tend to go for the inevitable bargain, but they often regret the purchase after a short time. These “cheap tools” frequently use inferior materials, or the workmanship is simply poor. As a result, they wear out far faster or can even cause damage to your valuable RC models. Poor screwdrivers, for example, are often not manufactured precisely and can strip the screw head. This happens all too often with hex screws when cheap tools are used. Then, if the screw is tight and the hex recess is damaged, they can often only be drilled out.
Unfortunately, this can also happen quickly with Torx, slotted, Phillips, etc. drives when poor-quality tools are used.
The same applies to other tools. In model building, precise needle-nose pliers are particularly important in order to reach areas in the models that are difficult to access. Cheap pliers are often not set up optimally. This shows as a bit of play in the joint, or a connection that is fitted too tightly. Often the two gripping surfaces are also not aligned precisely, meaning they never provide a really firm hold.
The aspects described are merely intended as a small example. We are sure that almost everyone has had their own experiences with such cheap tools.
But what really matters?
For the layperson, the difference between poor and good workmanship, and between low-grade and high-quality materials, is difficult to judge.
Our recommendation is therefore to rely on well-known branded tools. At shops such as Tooler.de, you will find only tested branded goods, at what we consider a reasonable price. This reduces the risk of being taken in by inferior products that, in the long run, cause more frustration than enjoyment. Brand manufacturers generally cannot afford bad reviews and therefore ensure consistently high product quality.
In this way, as a consumer you are taking the safest route. You may pay a little more at the start, but in the long term you save yourself a lot of hassle, frustration and follow-up costs.
This is not an advert for a particular brand, but we have been using tools from FACOM for a very long time. I would not want to be without this quality anymore.
